Race Report by James Arluck , Photos and Captions by Darth Vader and Web Droid The Tamiya Championship Series (TCS) made it’s annual Northern California stop on Sunday, June 7th, 2009. This year the race was hosted by Hobbytown USA of Fremont. The track equipment and driver’s stand was supplied by the RCCAR Club of San Jose. Both clubs worked together to set up an excellent track layout complete with chicanes, sweepers, hairpins, out braking zones, and a long straightaway. The surface was very good with only one bump on the back straightaway, and had excellent traction thanks to a liberal spraying of soda. Here are some pics of the track layout: 

Hobbytown held a warmup race on Saturday to give people an opportunity to learn the layout and get their cars dialed in early. They left the track open well into the night to allow out of town racers to get some practice in regardless of how late they arrived. Over 80 entries were spread among 6 different classes, Spec Novice, GT-1, GT-2, GT-3, F-1, and Mini. Drivers came from all over the west coast, with at least 10 people coming from Southern California, Jon McClean representing Washington, and the Hickman Brothers Traveling TCS Roadshow coming in from back east. TCS regular Doc Mertes had a scheduling conflict and was unable to attend, but his Red Dot motors were well represented in the Mini and F1 classes. The race day started bright and early at 7am with over 3 hours of practice and driver registration. Practice was open to all classes at once, so the faster cars had to be careful when passing so as to not run into the slower cars. For the most part everybody was respectful and gave each other room, but there were a few hard crashes, which are going to happen when you have that many people on the track at once. The track was shut down at 10:30 for concourse and the driver’s meeting. Qualifying kicked off at 11:15, with 2 rounds of qualifying. Qualifying ended around 3:00 and there was a short break to set up the mains. The spectator raffle was held during the break. The lucky winner took home a new Tamiya QD kit. The mains started at 3:30 and used a single main format. After the mains all of the racers pitched in to help pick up the track and as soon as that was finished the awards ceremony and driver’s raffle took place. The entire program was run quickly and fairly, with the program being done by 5pm allowing the out of towners to get on the road early.
Spec Novice Class This class is a great low-cost way to get into r/c racing. The class focuses around low cost cars and silver can motors to provide a way for new racers to try out r/c racing without being intimidated by the more experienced racers in the other classes. Seven racers signed up, with C.J. Rojas taking the TQ. In the main C.J. got away clean and left the others to battle for 2nd place. C.J led every lap and lapped up to 2nd place on his way to victory. Micky Thutiyakul took 2nd and Mark Santos took 3rd, only 5 seconds back from Micky. There was some grumbling that C.J. was a little too good to run in Novice, but considering that his time in the main would have put him near the bottom of the field in GT-3, and Mickey had a faster fast lap than C.J– I think he was in the right class.
GT-3 Class The next class up was GT-3. This is a little more advanced class, allowing any plastic chassis car but still using the silver can motors. In the past other TCS races have had an RPM limit on silver can motors, but not for this regional. This class was dominated by the Hickman brothers. Steve Hickman set the fast time in heat 1 of qualifying, with his brother Bruce “Doc” Hickman beating his time in heat 2. In the second round Steve set a new fast time that Doc couldn’t match, giving Steve the TQ, with Doc starting second and Norcal local Mike “sticks” Carino lining up 3rd. At the tone Steve and Doc took off cleanly, pulling away from the rest of the field. Doc’s short wheelbase Toyota seemed a little faster and carried more speed through the sweeper than Steve’s TA05 IFS NSX, but Steve’s car was more stable and had a little more cornerspeed in the slow corners. Doc shadowed Steve until Steve clipped a dot and Doc went by. Steve made up the time and started pushing Doc around the track until Doc went a little wide and Steve got back around him for good. Steve took the win less than a second ahead of Doc in 2nd, and Carino a lap back in 3rd.
GT-2 Tamiya decided to change up the rules for GT-2 this season to keep things fresh and interesting. For 2009 they specified IFS cars/bodies only, Novak or LRP 17.5s, and 8 minute races. This put a premium on finding the right combination of motor, timing, and gearing to keep the car fast for the whole race without fading. In qualifying James Arluck won both qualifiers and set the TQ ahead of Socal transplant and TCS carpet king Lee Passehl and Norcal local George Lin in 3rd. Lee’s car seemed to have more speed than James’ for the first half of each qualifier, but faded in the final minutes and allowed James to pull away. In the main James got off to a clean start with George putting a great move on Lee on the first lap to take 2nd away, moving Lee back to 3rd. George pressured James hard for the first minute, then James started to pull away as Lee and George started to battle it out for 2nd, slowing each other down. George had some bad luck in traffic allowing Lee to get by and put a bit of a gap between himself and George. The top 3 held their positions to the end, with James taking the win 7 seconds ahead of Lee, and George a few seconds behind.
F-1 The F-1 class at TCS has seen it’s share of ups and downs over the years. It was one of the original TCS classes and has gone through many changes. What started as a pan car class with silver can motors and foam tires changed to 4wd cars with rubber tires and 19Turn motors for a few years. This year it came back full circle with the release of the 15th anniversary F103 kit and the highly anticipated F104. In qualifying John Hicks dominated both rounds to take the TQ over Jim Rose in 2nd and Fernando “Coach” Jose in 3rd. In the main Hicks took off and never looked back. Fernando put a great move on Jim to move into 2nd on the first lap, but Jim eventually got back by. Jim kept pace with John for the first minute, but then got caught up in lapped traffic and dropped back into the pack. Jim’s car must have sustained damage in the crash because he pulled off several laps later. This left Fernando all alone in 2nd and Doc Hickman in 3rd.
Mini The Mini class has traditionally been the biggest class at TCS, and this year was no different. This year 27 drivers turned out to try and take down last year’s champion, Brandon “Flip-Flops” Koslosky. With no RPM limits for the silver cans the minis were clocked at over 25 miles per hour on the straightaway. In qualifying Ken Brumblay set the fast time in round 1. In the 2nd round both Brandon and Austin Brumblay were on pace to beat Ken’s TQ, but rolled over in the final laps allowing Ken’s first round TQ time to hold, with Brandon qualifying 2nd and Austin 3rd. At the Main Event tone Ken took off cleanly with Brandon pressuring Ken hard. The pressure must have gotten to Ken because he clipped a board on the 2nd lap allowing Brandon to get by for the lead, with Ken getting collected by the pack and dropping back to 5th. This left Brandon with a huge lead over Tim Copp in 2nd (with a box stock mini complete with friction shocks), and last year’s runner up Steve Ashby in 3rd. Brandon easily pulled away and built up a huge lead, winning by over half a lap with Tim in 2nd and Ken getting back past Ashby for 3rd.
GT-1 The fastest class of the day was the GT-1 class. This is the only class that allows double deck touring cars such as the 416 and EVO series cars, using 13.5 motors for power. NSX bodies dominated the class, with almost the entire A-main running NSX’s. In the first round of qualifying James Arluck set the fast time with his Plastic Fantastic TA-05. James was on pace to better his time in round 2 but hit a dot and rolled over on the last lap, allowing Albert “Mexicant” Jimenez to take the TQ with James in 2nd and former TCS champion Ling Kang Tong starting 3rd. Rumor around the track was that Albert offered Ling a year’s worth of free painting services if he took James out in the main. Those rumors became reality in the first corner when Ling got inside on James and moved him out of the way, dropping James to 3rd. Ling blew the second turn and let James back by, but his mission was accomplished because this gave Albert a sizeable lead before the first lap was complete, with James in 2nd and Aaron “Vader” Biner following close behind in 3rd. James’ car seemed slightly better than the rest, as he pulled a bit of a gap on Biner and chased down Albert. For the next 3 minutes the crowd was treated to an awesome display of clean racing, with Albert leading and James never more than 10 feet back. Halfway through the race Albert clipped the carousel coming onto the straightaway which allowed James to pull even on the straight. James had the inside line coming into the sweeper and snuck past Albert for the lead. Now it was Albert’s turn to apply the pressure to James, but James didn’t crack and even managed to pull out a slight lead as they moved through lapped traffic. There was a bit of a scare when Ling tried another takeout move on James while getting lapped, but luckily he missed and the race continued on. The race ended with James taking the win by 1 second over Albert in 2nd and Biner 4 second back in 3rd.
