REVIEW: PROTEK 7.4V 2 CELL 5000mAh 35C Lipo Battery Pack

REVIEW: PROTEK 7.4V 2 CELL 5000mAh 35C Lipo Battery Pack

Recently, the folks over at Protek sent over one of their latest stick packs for review. Initially, I was impressed by the look of the unit.

5000-1The Protek pack comes in a cool carbon fiber finish as shown below.

5000-7

Unlike some lipo packs, the Protek unit comes with removable connector. This is cool for many reasons. The main being the ability to build your own connector to the proper length. The pack comes standard with a deans connector as pictured.

5000-6

The picture below shows placement of the battery terminals. They are located at one end on the top. There is a possibility that one of the terminals could come in contact with the upper deck on some touring cars. This may require a minor dremel modification to your touring car upper deck. Its really quite easy. This will not be necessary on the majority of vehicles. 5000-5

The pack is humped on the bottom. This is nice for touring cars….as most have battery cut outs. The humps provide extra support in the cell cutouts. 5000-2In addition to working well on touring cars, the Protek 7.4V Lipo is also great for off-road. You can see it pictured in a Team Associated RC10T4 below! From the looks of it, the unit will work on all currently available off-road vehicles.

5000-3

As with all Lipo batteries, you MUST use a lipo safe charger. Use of a non-lipo charger can result in dangerous things including fire! This is no joke. A good pickup is the Protek iCharger.  Use of a Lipo Charging Sack is also recommended for safety reasons.  Proper use and charging can result in hundreds of runs.  This is important.5000-4

Overall Pros: I pack worked great.  I tried it in my Team Associated RC10 B4 . It was used running a LRP X-12 8.5 Turn motor. I found it to have a ton of run time. I was able to run many practice laps, a complete 5 minute race, and a ton more laps on a single charge!  Actual run times will vary depending on track, motor used, vehicle, etc.  Expect to get at least 15-20 minutes with a fast modified motor (8.5-10.5 Turn) under normal racing conditions (2wd offroad). If you are using a 13.5,  run time will definitely go up from there. When you add up the fact that the pack is under $100, its really a good value. Purchasing and maintaining normal cell packs would surely cost more.

Overall Cons: I felt the included bullet connectors were a bit weak. The problem is the small gold pins. They are very thin. I contacted Protek regarding this issue. They stated that they are aware of the issue. Future versions of the battery will include new and improved pins. Besides this issue, I had no other issues.

The pack sells for the street price of around $99 and is available through A-Main Hobbies here.
